The PCH Approach to Depression
At PCH, we care about what happened to you, not what’s wrong with you, so we developed our depression center around holistic treatment rather than the notion that depression is isolated to the mind. While we recognize that periods of sadness and even short-term depressive states are a normal part of the human experience, we’ve found that more severe forms of depression, including long-term depression, almost always require professional guidance to improve mental well-being.
Unfortunately, some of the individuals who come to us with a prior depression diagnosis may have been previously misdiagnosed or mismedicated. Prior to developing a treatment plan, we always begin by confirming (or rejecting) any previous diagnosis you may have. We do this for a couple of reasons.
Where We Begin
First, when most individuals experience a wave of depressive states and reach out for help, they most often start with the family doctor, who commonly responds with a blanket diagnosis of depression and medicates accordingly. In reality, however, experiencing depression may also be symptomatic of other underlying mental issues that family doctors are generally unequipped to diagnose, including bipolar, emotional dysregulation, mood disorders, PTSD, or psychological trauma.
The second reason we always start by confirming a diagnosis is due to the importance of medication and a focused treatment path to achieve well-being. Many individuals come to us after they’ve sought treatment or help elsewhere and it didn’t work. They’re still struggling, and we want to get to the root of why previous therapies didn’t have the intended effect. We frequently find that clients were previously unmedicated, medicated for an incorrect diagnosis, or treated for a “disorder” they didn’t have.
With these insights, our specialists are better equipped to develop a treatment program that works for the individual’s goals and challenges. Our program is most effective at treating individuals with moderate to severe depression, and our approach is flexible to accommodate clients also struggling with suicidality, anxiety, trauma, grief, and co-occurring issues.
Treatment Modalities for Depression Rehabilitation
Once we’ve confirmed a depression diagnosis, our dedicated depression treatment program employs a range of holistic, evidence-based treatment modalities to ensure you gain the attention, support, awareness, and skills you need to begin healing and moving forward with your life. Some of the treatment options we employ include:
- Individual therapy, including CBT and DBT
- Support groups and group therapy
- Sleep hygiene
- Healthy eating
- Exercise activities
- Yoga and meditation
- Art therapy
- Medication management
- Family therapy
Ultimately, our depression treatment center is centered around empowering our clients with the tools and skills they need to not only achieve well-being during treatment but also to return to their day-to-day lives with the confidence that they can continue healing on their own.
A Dedicated Treatment Facility for Depression
PCH is home to a dedicated emotional rehabilitation center for individuals struggling with depression. That means we have staff who only focus on healing and treating depression with specific treatment facilities designed to facilitate healing. Clients participate in a real-world model of treatment during our residential-level treatment program. Individual therapy is even led by program directors, so clients have daily access to a specialist who’s already helped countless individuals struggling with similar issues find the answers they’re looking for and achieve well-being.
Clients live in a shared residential space with others in their program while safely traveling between the residential and treatment facilities. We’ve found that this model more closely imitates real life than conventional treatment programs, so clients are much better prepared for successful re-entry into the world when they’re ready. That’s another thing that sets our depression treatment center apart. We never impose fixed treatment timelines on clients struggling with depression. Everyone heals and recovers at their own pace. While we’ve found that a minimum stay of six weeks is often required to see real progress, clients are free to stay as long as they need to recover.
