At PCH, we understand that bipolar disorder is a lifetime diagnosis, so we take a holistic approach to diagnosing, treating, and healing individuals struggling with bipolar tendencies.
Our Approach to Bipolar Treatment
Bipolar disorder is a complex psychological issue that manifests as an individual swinging between two intense emotional states called manic episodes and depressive episodes. These episodes typically last for weeks or months at a time. As a result, bipolar disorder impacts nearly every aspect of a person’s daily life, including relationships, work, sleep, eating patterns, and hobbies.
Can bipolar go away? Since it’s a lifetime diagnosis, there isn’t a “cure” or treatment to make bipolar behavior go away.
Bipolar disorder affects nearly every aspect of an individual’s daily life, and we believe treatment should too. At the PCH Bipolar Treatment Center, we’ve developed a holistic program to help individuals heal and align bipolar behaviors with all facets of their lives. Our residential-level bipolar treatment program empowers clients to understand bipolar mood patterns, past trauma, how these shape their perception of the world around them, and how they can learn to manage their mood patterns.
Where We Start
Overdiagnosis has been a serious issue in the field of psychiatry for decades now, and in our experience, bipolar is one of the diagnostic labels prone to misdiagnosis. We’ve found that emotional dysregulation is commonly misdiagnosed as bipolar disorder, most often because professionals don’t pay enough attention to symptomatology.
Our team regularly helps individuals who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder elsewhere come to terms with the reality that they aren’t actually bipolar. Most often, the medication they’ve prescribed doesn’t work, they may be disillusioned with professional treatment, and an inaccurate diagnosis can ultimately do more harm than good.
Before we ever treat someone who has been previously diagnosed with a mental issue, we first confirm the diagnosis. Our experts specialize in understanding the nuances between Bipolar II and trauma-related emotional dysregulation that many other professionals miss. Our holistic approach also helps uncover connections between trauma and mood patterns that may have been overlooked in the past.
Bipolar Treatment Timelines
Since bipolar disorder touches virtually every part of an individual’s life and may be rooted in past trauma, everyone has to heal and learn to live with bipolar mood patterns at their own pace. That’s why we don’t assign a fixed timeline to our bipolar treatment program. Instead, we work with clients to establish realistic treatment goals and timeframes.
As part of treatment, we also balance individual therapy with group therapy. Individual therapy helps clients make connections between past trauma and today’s challenges while gaining skills and tools to manage their moods. At the same time, group therapy helps build a community around shared struggles and celebrating successes.
Along with individualized treatment, PCH also provides optional family therapy to help families heal alongside their loved ones. Individuals diagnosed as bipolar can be difficult to live with as they unpredictably swing between extreme emotional states. Our family therapy program helps families reach a place of understanding and compassion, so they can play a positive role in the healing and recovery of their loved one.
Our Residential-Level Bipolar Treatment Center
Our residential-level Bipolar Treatment Center provides a supportive housing environment for individuals in our bipolar treatment program. To imitate a real-world setting, clients in our program have the option to live in residential centers located near our treatment facility.
While here, they learn to live as a community and spend time together in a quiet, safe environment where they’re free to try out new skills and behaviors without fear of judgment. We provide all the comforts of home and encourage clients to explore the nearby community as they take part in our holistic treatment that goes beyond traditional therapy with:
- Cooking
- Sleep management
- Therapeutic yoga
- Art therapy
- Book discussions
- Breathwork
Co-Occurring and Complex Bipolar Treatment
The specialists at our Bipolar Treatment Center have the expertise to treat co-occurring and complex cases of bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is often paired with a drug or alcohol addiction, along with other mental issues like body dysmorphia and eating disorders. If you suspect bipolar behavior may be exacerbated by related mental issues, our program is more than flexible enough to accommodate.
